Question
Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction in which ammonia and oxygen are water and a nitrogen oxide containing 46.68% nitrogen by mass are the products. The molecular and empirical formulas of the nitrogen oxide are the same. An aluminum - carbon compound that is 74.97% aluminum by mass reacts with water to produce aluminum hydroxide and a hydrocarbon that is 74.87% carbon by mass. Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction in which copper (1) sulfide and oxygen are reactants and a copper oxide containing 88.82% copper by mass and sulfur dioxide are the products. The molecular and empirical formulas of the copper oxide are the same.Explanation / Answer
given ammonia and oxygen are being reacted to form water and nitrogen oxide.
NH3 + O2 H2O + NxO
now we have to balance the equation
given that moecular formula and emperical formula are same
and nitrogen/oxygen mass percentage = 46.68%
nitrogen will exist in multiple of it's molar mass
hit and trial take x = 1
molar mass of nitogen atom = 14g
mass of compound = NO = 14 + 16 = 30g
% of N in NO = 14/30 * 100 = 46.68 %
So product formed is confirmed as NO
now balancing the equation we have
NH3 + O2 H2O + NxO
x =1
NH3 + O2 H2O + NO
balancing atoms both side
multiplying NH3 by 4 we get 4 N and 12 H left side similarly we have to balance no. of atoms in right also so multiplying H2O by 6 we get 12 H and multiplying NO by 4 we get 4 NO on the right and oxygen is automatically balanced both side when multiplied by 5 on the left
4NH3 + 5O2 6H2O + 4NO balanced equation
