Question
Complete the chemical equation for the combustion of n-butyl alcohol, C_4H_10O, below. Please for balance and then answer questions a & b. C_4H_10O + O_2 rightarrow a) What is the theoretical carbon dioxide yield in moles when 3.7 g of n-butyl alcohol is combusted? b) What is the delta H of the reaction above, given that the standard heats of formation for CO_2, H_20 and n-butyl alcohol are -393.5 kJ/mole, -241.82 kJ/mole and --327.1kJ/mole, respectively. In the space below please calculate the number of valence electrons for NH^+_4, then dr Lewis structure and state its basic (electron) geometry & molecular geometry.Explanation / Answer
Ans 13.
The balanced reaction will be
C4H10O + 6O2 ---> 4CO2 + 5H2O
a)
1 mole of combustion of compound produces 4 moles of CO2
3.7 g = 3.7 / 74 = 0.05 moles of butanol
0.05 moles will produce 0.05 x 4 = 0.2 moles of CO2
so the theoretical yield of carbon dioxide is 0.2 moles.
B)
Delta H for the reaction can be calculated by subtracting the enthalpies of formation of reactants from that of products .
enthalpy of formation of oxygen is 0
Delta H = [ ( 4 x -393.5) + ( 5 x -241.82) ] - ( -327.1)
Delta H = -2456 KJ/ mol
