Compare the size of the change in pH value when HCl and NaOH are added to water vs the size of change in pH value for the standard reference buffer. Explain why the change for water vs buffer were the same or different in size.

Which household substances behaved as buffers? Explain reasoning.

Test Solution Initial pH pH after HCl was added pH after NaOH added Distilled water 6 pH 2.58 pH 2.76 pH Standard reference buffer 6.23 pH 6.08 pH 6.19 pH

Explanation / Answer

When HCl is added to pure substances like distilled water, it decreases the pH of the solution as the acidity of the solution increases.

If the strong acid is added to the solution of a buffer, there is no such change in the buffer system as it won't alter the pH by adding trace amounts of either acid or base. Hence we couldn't observe that much change in the system.

Among the given household systems, baking soda acts as a buffer as there is not much change after adding either acid or a base.
