Question

Hi! Could you help me with analysis question number 2 please?? The experiment detail is on the picture together with the procedure (scroll down picture) ANALYSIS Answer the following questions in your lab notebook in pen. Number each answer as shown below, and in the following order. Write in complete sentences, and explain in enough detail that your writing is persuasive and logical. Remember to write in a third- person, impersonal style; avoid personal pronouns such as I, you, we, my, our, etc.. Show all work for calculations! 1. Which product(s) in the reduction of benzil are found in your sample? Back up your detailed but concise argument with data from the following: melting point test, IR spectra (attach copies of your product spectrum and the benzil spectrum with your report, and label useful absorption bands or empty regions on both spectra), TLC results, in particular the Rf values. 2. Identify three sources of experimental error in the experiment, and describe in detail how each source of error affected either the percent yield or the purity of your product. For each source of error, propose an improvement to the procedure to eliminate or mitigate the error, and describe how the improvement would improve your results

Explanation / Answer

The results you have got are pretty normal, but below I stated the 3 possible errors in the experiment
1) Waiting until all the precipitate disappears this indicates the completion of the reaction. If the reaction is
not complete it can result in two products which include unreacted reactant. So, in order to avoid this
wait until the ppt disappears in step 2.
2) Make sure to add boiling chip when heating the reaction mixture because it will prevent the mixture
from superheating. If the reaction mixture gets overheated it might degrade the products
3) It will be difficult to known the melting point if the product is not dried thoroughly. Therefore make sure to
dry the product completely and try get rid of any organic solvents.
