Question
What property of a solution is described by its pH? A solution has a pH of 8.7. a. What is the pOH of this solution? ____ b. Is the solution acidic, basic, or neutral? ____ Solution A has a hydronium ion concentration of 3.8 times 10^-5 M. Solution B has a hydronium ion concentration of 2.5 times 10^-4 M. a. Which solution has the larger hydronium ion concentration? _______ b. Which solution has the greater pH? ____ Estimate the pH of an aqueous solution of each of the following compounds by indicating whether the pH is greater than 7 ( > 7), less than 7 (Explanation / Answer
1) The property of a solution that is described by its pH is the solution's concentration of hydronium ions (H3O+). The higher the concentration of hydronium ions, the lower the pH of the solution. And of course the lower the pH, the more acidic the solution is.
2) Given , pH =8.7
a) we have pH +pOH =14
=> pOH =14-8.7 =5.3
b) Since pH< 7 ,therefore the solution will be basic.
3) Solution A has [H3O+] =3.8 x 10-8 M =0.000000038 M and Solution B has [H3O+] =2.5 x 10-4 =0.00025 M
a) Solution B has larger [H3O+] =2.5 x 10-4 M=0.00025 M [since 0.00025 > 0.000000038]
b) pH of solution A = -log(3.8 x 10-8 ) =-(0.58-8) =7.42
pH of solution B = -log(2.5 x 10-4 ) =-(0.40-4) =3.60
Thus solution A has the greater pH. (7.42 > 3.60 )
