What prevents the man in the street from breaking codes is very often processing power. Now if you happen to have a few thousand dollars to throw around, you can very easily buy a Cray supercomputer, or buy a few hundred quad-core servers and cluster them together. In this case, what would have taken a few days to crack on your desktop computer, can now be cracked within seconds. You think large companies and governments don't have this type of processing power at their fingertips. Think again! Think of Botnets, which in many cases exist as a worldwide group of 30,000 to 50,000 computers. So even dedicated crackers have the required processing power.

So if all encryption can be broken, why then encrypt data? What is the purpose for encrypting data?

The purpose of encryption is to provide safety to the confidentiality of digital data stored on computer systems or transmitted via the Internet or other computer networks.Just because people have more processing power to
decrypt the data does not mean that we should not encrypt data. There are
new and new approaches to encryption which will make the process more and
more safe.The sensitive information can not be put without encryption because in such cases the systems will break down and it will be hard to survive.
