Question

A group of students carried out a Boyle's Law experiment as done in your lab work by using a computer In the Table below are the results of volume and pressure relationships of two measurements a) Is this relationship of P and V direct or inverse _______ b) In the above experiment volume was changed from 7.8 mL (p = 1.43 atm as above) to 17.8 mL. Calculate the new pressure. Write gas law equation and rearranged Eq and calculation. Table of given values Eq. and Rearr. Eq Calculation Steps (with units 2 pts) Fill in the correct word In _________ law, the temperature (T) of a sample of gas increases, the pressure (P) of a sample of a gas ________ if the volume is kept constant A sample of 0.658 g of an impure sample of KHP was titrated with o.120 M NaOH standardized solution. The volume of NaOH needed to neutralize was 17.12 mL of NaOH. Calculate the percent of KHp in this sample (Molar mass of KHP is 204.2g). with units and c v. and fv and add Show step number for each calculation step.

Explanation / Answer

(a) As the volume increases the pressure has been supressed. Hence both volume and pressure of a gas are inversely proportional to each other.

(b)

Formula, P1 V1 = P2 V2

1.43 * 7.8 = P2 * 17.8

P2 = 0.627 atm

* In Gye Lussac's law, the temperature of a given gas increases, the pressure of sample of a gas decreases, if the volume is kept constant.

* Moles of NaOH = 0.120 * 17.12 / 1000 = 0.00205 mol

THerefroe, moles of KHP = 0.00205 mol

Mass of KHP = 0.00205 * 204.2 = 0.420 g.

% purity of KHP = (0.420 / 0.658) * 100 = 63.8%
