Question
Volume of H_2O in 50 mL beaker ____ ml. Volume of H_2O in 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask ____ mL. Volume of H_2O in 100 mL graduated cylinder ___ mL. Volume of H_2O in 10 mL graduated cylinder ___ mL. What change did you notice occurring in your reading of the volume of water as it was transferred from one piece of glassware to the next? What could cause a change in the volume reading of the sample between each piece of equipment if it was assumed that all water did transfer? If you needed to measure 10 mL of a liquid which of the pieces used would you predict to give the greatest degree of accuracy and why?Explanation / Answer
1)
From the above information it is clear that same volume of water shows different reading in different apparatus. And out of four glass wares ,three shows almost same reading (i.e.beaker, Erlenmeyer flask and 100 ml graduated cylinder) but 10 ml shows a great deviation from other three.
2)
It is due to improper calibration of apparatus. It is an error during the making of apparatus.
3)
In order to get greatest degree of accuracy we must select 100 ml graduated cylinder. It's value is close to other three and is also graduated,so it must have high degree of accuracy.Although beaker and Erlenmeyer flask show same reading it is not suggested since it doesn't have any graduation.
