Question
Product Composition and Reaction Stoichiometry suppose NH3 and o2 react to produce H20, and a nitrogen oxide which contains 30.45% nitrogen by mass. Complete the reaction equation by entering the coefficients of the reactants and products and also the empirical formula of the nitrogen oxide product. NH3 O2 H20 No All coefficients must be reduced to the smallest possible integers. Note that, while it is not usual to write coefficients of exactly 1, you must enter 1 in th x, if that is the correct value. e formula for the nitrogen oxide must be written with the N symbol first and o second. The usual subscription of numbers in the formula is to be inferre formula for water would be entered simply as "H20") Submit Answer Incorrect. Ans 1.
Let the mass of Nitrogen oxide be 100
If nitrogen is 30.45% so it is 30.45 grams in the compound , and the rest 100 - 30.45 = 69.55 grams is oxygen .
30.45 grams Nitrogen = 30.45 / 14 = 2.175 moles
69.55 grams oxygen = 69.55 / 16 = 4.347 moles
Divide both these values by 2.175 , to get the nitrogen ; oxygen ratio = 1:2 .
So the empirical formula of the compound is NO2
Now balance the reaction , by equalising the number of atoms on the left to that on right.
The balanced reaction will be :
4NH3 + 7O2 = 6H2O + 4NO2
