Question
Experiment 22 Advance Study Assignment Properties of Systems in Chemical Equilibrium 1. Methyl orange. HMo, is a the equation: common acid-base indicator. In solution it ionizes according to yellow If methyl orange is added to distilled water, the solution turns yellow. If drop or two of 6 M HCI is added to the yellow sol tums red. If to that solution one adds a few drops of 6 MNaoH, the color reverts to yellow. a. why does adding 6 MHCI to the yellow solution of methyl orange tend to cause the color to change to red? (Note that in solution HCI exists as H' and Cl ions.) b. Why does adding 6 M NaoH to the red solution tend to make it turm back to yellow? (Note that in solution NaoH exists as Na and oH ions.) How does increasing loH j shift Reaction the discussion section? How would the resulting change in tH Jaffect the dissociation reaction of HMO?Explanation / Answer
Q1
a)
there is a color change mainly due to the presence of of H+ excess, so the shift goes from
H+ + MO- towards more HMO(aq)
note that HMO(aq) is produced, which is RED, therefore, there is more red color in solution
b)
if we add NaOH, we will neutralize H+ ions in solution to H2O(l)
if H+ decreases, then HMO must convert towards more H+ and MO- in solution
which is yellow color, and th red HMO decreases drastically
