Question
I need to calculate the theoretic yield for this reaction of 2-methylcyclohexanol and sulfuric acid.
I have found the molecular weight of 2-methylcyclohexanol to be 114.188 and sulfuric acid to be 98.079.
Procedure Set up for simple distilltion as shown in Figure 12.8. Use a small graduated Set up for simple distillation as shown in Figure 12-8. Use a small graduated cylinder to collect your product - you may have to set it on top of an upside-down beaker to get it close enough to the vacuum or distillation adapter. Once your apparatus is ready lower the hotplate to remove the 25 mL round- bottom flask, so you can prepare the reaction mixture. Place 33 mmol of 2-methylcyclohexanol in the 25 mL round bottom flask. Add slowly, with swirling, 20-30 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid - the rea rops of concentrated sulfuric acid- the reactionExplanation / Answer
1 mole of 1-methylcyclohexanol reacts with sulfuric acid and undergoes dehydration to form 1 mol of 1-methylcyclohexene product.
moles 1-methylcyclohexanol = 33 mmol
moles of product formed = 33 mmol
molar mass of 1-methylcyclohexene = 96.2 g/mol
theoretical yield of product 1-methylcyclohexene = 33 mmol x 96.2 g/mol = 3.175 g
