Question

In a few sentences, give a thermodynamic explanation of whether CsCl2 with the fluorite structure is likely to exist.
Examples of useful terms and values that may help to answer the question: ionization energy, heat of formation, lattice enthalpy, bond dissociation enthalpy, etc. In a few sentences, give a thermodynamic explanation of whether CsCl2 with the fluorite structure is likely to exist.

Explanation / Answer

The ionization energy for Cs to form Cs+ is low, whereas for Cs+ to form Cs2+ is very high. Hence it's not possible to remove an electron from the outer shell of Cs+(i.e. the inert gas - Radon configuration). Hence CsCl2 can't exist.

In addition to the above conclusion, the heat of formation for the CsCl2 is very high, hence it can't exist.

Similarly, the lattice enthalpy for the formation of CsCl2 is very high. Hence it can't exist.

Further, the bond dissociation enthalpy for CsCl2 is very low, hence it can't exist.
