A saturated fatty acid with a greater molar mass has a higher melting point than a saturated fatty acid with a lower molar mass. A saturated fatty acid with a greater molar mass has a lower melting point than a saturated fatty acid with a lower molar mass Asaturated fatty acid has a higher melting point than an Co unsaturated fatty acid. Asaturated fatty acidhas a lower melting point than an Lunsaturated fatty acid. dint Previous Give Up & View Solution Check AnswerExplanation / Answer
The melting point of fatty acids increases with increasing chain length (greater the chain length, greater the molar mass). Because the longer chains will create more points of interaction between each molecule. More the interaction, lesser the chance of escape means less melting point.
So option A is true.
Now,
Saturated fatty acids have higher melting points than unsaturated fatty acids of the same length. Unsaturated fatty acids consists of double bonds means the cis and trans conformation which means they are no longer straight which results in strain especially in the case of cis conformation, causing those chains to be worsely packed, and hence less energy is required to overcome the molecular forces. That's why unsaturated fatty acids have lower melting point.
So our answer is C.
Our answer is A and C.
