is reasonably dryv the mixture. The dried or acid, naphthalene and magnesium chloride are present in a solid mixture. Propose a detail separation scheme to isolate these three compounds as solids. Below is a list of reagents available in lab. You may use any of these given reagents (e.g., acids, bases) as needed in your separation scheme and you also have access to a solvent evaporator if a solvent must be evaporated, and a filtration apparatus to filter. Be specific in each reagent name and technique used in your separation scheme. The most efficient separation scheme will receive the most credit 10% aqueous NaOH 5% aqueous NaHCO3 6 M HCI 5% HCI Saturated sodium chloride Diethyl ether anhydrous Na2SO4 Anhydrous MgSO4 CO Mg(CI2 2-methylbenzoic acid odi

Explanation / Answer

5) The extraction procedure for the mixture of 2-methylbenzoic acid, Naphthalene and MgCl2 is as follows.

a) Add Diethylether to the mixture so that only organic compounds (2-methylbenzoic acid, Naphthalene) will get dissolved and MgCl2 remains undissolved. Then filter the undissolved MgCl2

b) To the mixture of organic compounds in diethylether, add 5% aqueous Sodium bicarbonate NaHCO3(suggestable for acids) so that it reacts with 2-methylbenzoic acid and forms salt which can be easily seperated with water work-up. Then 2-methylbenzoic acid can be restored by adding 5% HCl to the water so that the 2-methylbenzoate gets protonated and gets converted into 2-methylbenzoic acid.

c) The remaining solution of Naphthalene in diethylether can be restored by simple evoperation of the solvent.

1) The diviation from the expected result is because of the presence of salt of salicilic acid. It is because of the extraction with sodium bicarbonate which forms salt with salicilic acid. So if we add mild acid to this solution and evoperate the solvent we will be left with expected amount of salicilic acid with expected properties.
