3. A2.52 gram piece of Magnesium is cut up into strips and placed in a beaker with 125 ml of 1.5 a Write a balanced reaction for the single displacement reaction that occurs. (2 pts M HCI b. Calculate the mass of Hydrogen gas that could be produced during the reaction.(6 pts) c. What is the limiting reactant? ( 1 pt) If the gas produced during the reaction is stored in a dry container at 25°C, it has a density of 0.12g/L, How many ml will it occupy? (2 pts) d. 4. Calculate the wavelength (in meters) of a baseball traveling at 90mph if it weighs 145gExplanation / Answer
Ans a. Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) ====> MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Ans b. Moles of Mg = mass / molar mass = 2.52 g / 24 g/mol = 0.105 moles
Moles of HCl = molarity x volume = 1.5 M x 0.125 L = 0.188 moles
Since mole ratio of Mg to HCl is 1 : 2 according to balanced equation.
0.105 moles of Mg will require = 2 x 0.105 = 0.210 moles of HCl
Thus HCl is limiting reagent here.
Mass of H2 gas formed will be =
0.188 moles of HCl x 1 mole H2 / 2 moles HCl x 2 g H2 / 1 mole H2 = 0.188 g H2 gas.
Ans. c. HCl is the limiting reagent.
Ans d. Mass = volume x density
Volume of gas occupied will be = Mass of H2 / density of H2
= 0.188 g H2 / 0.12 gL^-1
= 1.56 L = 1560 mL
