Question

Application A: Reading the Phase Response Curve.

In three or four sentences, write a figure caption stating how the data might have been collected. Your answer must demonstrate an understanding of subjective time and how it should appear on the x-axis.Also, explain how one might estimate an organism’s subjective time, and explain whether or not the organisms under study were likely free-running or entrained prior to and after the light pulse. Finally, write an answer to this question: At what time of day should you deliver a pulse of light if you want to move the circadian rhythm 6 hours earlier? Write a couple of sentences proposing how you would accomplish this. In your answer, make sure that you indicate the specific times of day you would protect the organisms from light in order to maximize the effectiveness of your phase-changing effort.

Application B: Combating Jet Lag

Write up a light-exposure plan that will allow you to travel from North Carolina (eastern time zone) to Hawaii without undergoing severe jet lag; make sure you explain what times you need to be in the dark, protected from light, and remember that your goal is to be fully acclimated to Hawaii time when you arrive in Honolulu. Done well, this will take only a diagram showing times of light exposure and protection, and one or two explanatory paragraphs.

Explanation / Answer

In the graph shows the changes in the circadian rhythms in responses to change in light exposure: The X-axis shows the Time of day in hours on upper case and circadian phase of light exposure in lower case. The Y-axis shows the Phase shifts in hours, it has two sections called phase delay and phase advance.

The phase delay is occur due to exposure to sunlit through the initial part of the Gonyaulax night and the phase advance is occur due to exposure to sunlit through the latter part of the Gonyaulax night.

One might estimate an organism’s subjective time, by 24-hour standardized notation of circadian cycle (CT). If CT is 0, it is start of a subjective day, whereas the CT-12 represents start of a subjective night. The organisms under study were likely entrained prior to and after the light pulse.
