Question

Experiment 39 Prelaboratory Assignment Qual Il. Ni2+, Fe+.A+. Zn2* 1. Identify the reagent (and its concentration) that is used to confirm the ,Desk No. a. Ni b. Fe c. Zn2 each of the following ions: presence of each of the following 2. Confirmatory tests for the various ions are often cokorful. Identify the cofirmatory compoundion and the color for Ion Confirmatory Compoundion Color Fe'. NiP- Al 3. Identify the reagent that separates a. Fe" from Zn2.Explain the chemistry of the separation. b. Fe from Ni. Explain the chemistry of the separation. Al from Zn2 Explain the chemistry of the separation. Experiment 394

Explanation / Answer

1.

(a) Ni2+ ion can be confirmed by treating it with Dimethyl GlyOxime (DMG) which give red azo dye.

(b) Fe3+ ion can be confirmed by treating it with potassium ferro cyanide K4[Fe(CN)6] which give prussian blue colour precipitate.

(c) Zn2+ ion can be confirmed by treating it with NaOH solution which gives white precipitate which completely soluble in excess NaOH solution.

2.

(d) Al3+ can be confired by treating it with NaOH solution which gives gelatinous precipitate which is completely soluble in excess NaOH solution.

3.

(a) Add NH4Cl and NH4OH whcih gives dirty green precipitate of Fe3+ ion but not for Zn2+ ion

(b) Add NH4Cl and NH4OH whcih gives dirty green precipitate of Fe3+ ion but not for Ni2+ ion

(c) Add NH4Cl and NH4OH whcih gives gelatinous precipitate of Al3+ ion but not for Zn2+ ion
