Titrations Titration is the process of controlled addition of a substance to a second substance with which it reacts. The substance to be added is called the titrant and is delivered from a piece of equipment which is calibrated to record exactly how much elivered. This is usually a buret. The substance which is receiving the titrant is called the analyte. In volumetric titrations, the analyte solution is typically contained in an Erlenmeyer flask which is shaped to allow the experimenter to swirl the contents without danger of spilling. Titrant is added from the buret until precisely the stoichiometric amount has been added. That is the real point of a titration. The experimenter will need some indication that it is time to stop. Usually a visual indicator is used. This is a species with similar chemical properties to the analyte where it exhibits one color in a pre reacted form and a different color in a post reacted form.
