Question

mum amounts of sodium chloride that would satisfy these instructions. 2. Two students each measured the density of a quartz sample three times: Student A Student B The density found in the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics for quartz is 2.65 g/mL 1. 3.20 g/mL 2.58 g/mL 2.10 g/mL 2.82 g/mL 2.48 g/mL 2.59 g/mL 2.63 g/mL mean 2.63 g/mL (a) Which student measured density with the greatest precision? Explain your answer. (b) Which student measured density with the greatest accuracy? Explain your answer. (c) Are the errors for these students random or systematic? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

2)

a)The student B measured density with the greatest precision, because all data that he/she obtained have really similar values. The average of his/her measures was 2.63 g/mL, the highest coefficient of variation from student B measurements was about 7.22% meanwhile in the student A measurements was 21.67%, considerably higher.

b)The student B also measured density with the greatest accuracy, because his/her data show the smallest deviations regarding to the real value (2.65 g/mL). The highest error from student B measurements was 6.4%, meanwhile the highest error from student A measurements was 20,75%. Student A was much less accurate than student B.

c)The error from the students are random, because there are not the same pattern between student A measures and student B measurements. The coefficient of variation from student A is much higher than the student B, it's likely that student A commited more mistakes during his/her measurements.
