Ksp for KHT in water: 9.47x10^-4

Follow-up Questions- For numerical problems show your work in an orderly fashion, with units in the set up, and report your answers to the correct significant figures. 1. Using the class average value of Ksa for KHT in water, calculate the molar solubility of KHT in 0.10 M K250 Do you expect the ACTUAL solubility to be greater than, less than, or equal to this calculated solubility? Using a conceptual explanation consistent with the advanced concepts introduced on page 2, clearly and completely explain how you came to your conclusion. a)

Explanation / Answer

Molar solubility

1. KHT

Ksp = [K+][HT-]

with,

Ksp = 9.47 x 10^-4

0.1 M K2SO4 has, [K+] = 2 x 0.1 M = 0.2 M

So,

molar solubility of KHT in 0.1 M K2SO4 = [HT-] = Ksp/[K+]

                                                               = 9.47 x 10^-4/0.2

                                                               = 4.735 x 10^-3 M

2. actual molar solubility would be greater (0.0307 M) than the claculated value (0.004735 M) as KHT is more soluble in solution.
