Question
Chem 102 SU13 8. Are the following processes (a) spontaneous as described (b) spontaneous in the reverse direction or (c) in equilibrium? 8a. (2 points) A piece of cold metal is added to hot water and the water gets cooler. (a) (b) (c) (circle correct answer) Exam 3 Name 8b. (2 points) Acetone vapor at a pressure of 1 atm condenses to liquid acetone at the normal boiling point of acetone, 56.0 °c (a) (b) (c) (circle correct answer) Se. (2 points) Water at room temperature decomposes into H-(g) and O4). (a) (b) ( (circle correct answer) 9.6 points) Use Hess's law to calculate Gnn using the following information. NO(g) + 0(g) NO2(g) 23(g) 32(g) 02(g) 2 0(g) NO(g) + 03(g) NO2(g) + O2(g) Gorxn® +489.6 kJ Gorxn = +463.4 kJ Gorxn =-199.5 kJExplanation / Answer
A spontaneous process is a process that occurs on its own without outside intervention otherwise non spontaneous.
When cold metal is added to hot water, water looses heat and metal gains heat with out outside intervention and hence is spontaneous.
when acetone has to condense at 56.8 deg,c, heat need to be removed from acetone vapor to condense and hence non spontaneous.
Water does not decmpose to H2 and O2 without heating to as high as 2000 deg.c and hence non-spontaneous.
4. 2O3 (g)-------->3O2 (g) deltaG=489.6 (1)
dividing by 2 and reversing the reaction 1.5O2 (g)------->O3(g), deltaG=-489.6/2= -244.8 Kj (1A)
O2(g)---------->2O (g), deltaG=463.4 Kj (2), dividing by 2, 0.5O2(g)--------> O(g), deltaG=463.4/2= 231.7 Kj (2A)
Eq.1A-Eq.2 A gives O2(g)+O(g) -------->O3(g), deltaG=-244.8-231.7 KJ=-476.5 KJ (3)
NO(g)+ O3(g) ------->NO2(g)+O2(g), deltaG= -199.5 KJ (4)
Eq.3+Eq.4 gives NO(g)+ O(g) ----->NO2(g), deltaG=-476.5-199.5 =-676 KJ
the deltaG for the desired reaction.
