We observe coloured flames. Which exist for sometime.
This is because alkali and alkaline earth metals has outermost valence electron which are very loosely packed. When heated these electrons absorb sufficient energy to excite to the next energy level. These electrons remain in that excited state for very short period. When they return back to thw ground level they emit this energy in form of energy which lie in the visible region. Hence we can see coloured flames.
