Question
11. A group of students were measuring the normal boiling points of a series of compounds with the same approximate molecular masses: butane (CHH.CHCH.CH), acetone (CHCOCH) and 1 propanol (CHCHCHOHD. Unfortunately, the labels for each bottle were mixed up and the students could no longer identify each compound by bottle. Instead, they determined the intermolecular forces for each compound and matched the correct boiling point to each compound. Identify the types of intermolecular force in each compound and assign the conrect boiling point: 562 -0.5 °C, and 97.4 °CExplanation / Answer
butane does not contain any electronegative atom so there is no intermolecular force acting on it. so the compound has a lowest boiling point is butane.
on one hand, acetone, there is one double bonded oxygen atom which only has a strong dipole-dipole force acting between the molecules. on the other hand, 1-propanol has a hydroxy group which can form strong H-bonding between the molecules which is breakable only at the higher temperature. so the compound with a highest boiling point will be 1-propanol.
finally,
butane = -0.5oC
acetone= 56.2oC
1-propanol = 97.4oC
