Do the numerical values agree with the trend we have studied? a. b. CI C. Br List the first ionization energy with units for each element. Find and use the table in your textbook. Mark the table in your book. (Hint: you may need this table on an exam.) Do the numerical values agree with the trend we have studied? 5. a. Be b. MB c. Ca d. Sr

Explanation / Answer

4. Electron affinity is defined as the amount of energy released when an electron is added to an atom in gaseous and neutral state. It is measured in units of KJ.mol-1.The first electron affinities of given atoms are as:

F has -328 KJ/mol

Cl has -349 KJ/mol

Br has -324 KJ/mol

I has -295 KJ/mol

Electron affinity decreases down the group with the exception of chlorine(high value). F has low value because it is small and addition of electron results in electron-electron repulsion.

5. Ionisation energy is defined as the energy required to remove an electron from atom when it is is in gaseous state. Its units are KJ/mol. The first ionisation energies of given atoms are:

Be has 900 KJ/mol

Mg has 738 KJ/mol

Ca has 590 KJ/mol

Sr has 549 KJ/mol

Ionisation energy decreases as we go down the group from Be to Sr as the size of the atom increases.
