Question
No Spacing C105 Preparation of an Iron Oxalate Complex Post-Lab Complete the following for your Preparation of an Iron Oxalate post-ab assignment. Upload this as a PDF document to Blackboard by 1159 pm on Wednesday, 29 November. Name Date: This lab's procedure requires two weeks to complete. You can complete your post-Jab after you have observed your crystals in the second week. Don't try to submit it before then; you have to see your crystals first. 1. Discuss at least two factors during your synthesis process could affect the size, purity, and/or yield of your crystals. 2. Recrystallization is a product purification technique that is commonly used in many organic chemistry labs; if you go on to take an organic chemistry course, you may use it to purify samples of aspirin or ibuprofen that you synthesize. xplain the theory behind recrystallization; that is, how does it function to purify a compound? 3. Based on your observations of the crystals, give one sentence about how the quantity of alcohol added to the crystal solutions affected the yield of the crystals. 4 Copy and paste the hypothesis you formed in your pre-lab here. From what you observed about your crystals, is the hypothesis appear valid?Explanation / Answer
1. Presence of Impurities, improper decantation, using more or less than specified amount of solvent
i.e) ethanol etc can affect the size, purity or the yield of the crystals.
2. In recrystallization either the impurities or the pure compound is dissolved in the solvent
and then dehydrated and separated to get the pure compound free from impurity.
3. Alcohol is used to precipitate the complex iron salt, if more alcohol is used then it is difficult
to precipitate and hence the yield will reduce. If less alcohol is used separation becomes
tough and the yield will be less again.
4. If the observation of the color change recorded in the pre-lab hypothesis matches your
experimental observations then your hypothesis will be valid.
