Question

Answer all 3 General Chemistry I November 22, 2017 Exam #3 1) I2.50 g of sulfur hexafluoride (SF) gas is introduced into an evacuated 750.0 ml container at 60 "C, what pressure in atmosphere is developed? 2.) A piece of dry ice (CO, o) has a mass of 22.50 g. It is dropped into an evacuated 2.50 L flask. What isthe pressure in the flask at-4 ml. What is the new volume when an additional 0.011 moles of He are added to the container at constant temperature and pressure? 3.) An inflatable container (a balloon) initially contains 0.033 moles of He gas when the volume is 550

Explanation / Answer

1) According to gas law, PV =nRT

or, P = nRT / V

given that, T = 60oC = 273 +60 = 333K

V =volume = 750ml = 0.750L

n= number of moles = mass / molar mass

molar mass of SF6 = 32 + (6 x 19) 146 gm / mole

n = 2.50 gm / (146 gm/mole) = 0.017 mole

RR = universal gas constant = 0.082 L atm / mol K

hence, pressure, P = nRT / V = ( 0.017 mole x 0.082 L atm / mol K x 333 K) / 0.750 L = 0.62 atm
