Composting

Humans generate a lot of waste. For archeologists that is a good thing; much has been learned about the past by studying the garbage piles left behind by our ancestors. The downside is that it shows that garbage persists in the environment for a long time without breaking down. In the modern world people generate even more waste per person than ever before. What is done with waste requires planning and can be costly to a community.

As communities create ever more trash, people have started to look at ways they can reduce the amount of waste generated. To cut down on waste everyone is encouraged to use the three R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. In recent years there has been more talk about composting, both in the home and at the municipal level, as another way to reduce the volume of waste that is sent to landfills.

Many municipalities are incorporating composting into their waste removal plan. One city that has a large program is San Francisco. San Francisco has a very ambitious goal: to achieve zero waste by 2020. You can learn more about their program, efforts, and successes here:

Additionally, you might want to conduct some outside research on San Francisco’s partner “Recology.” Looking at this program should give you an idea of what it would be like to live in a community committed to the 3Rs.

The process of recycling of dead and decaying matter into soil is called composting and the organic and mineral rich soil called compost. It works as fertilizer or a rich organic and mineral source for growth of plants. The compost is highly recommended for organic forming and some other types of farming too. Types of composting are as follows:

The organic manure will enrich soil. Compost is ecofriendly and can safely use as manure. It prevents soil erosion and help soil to retain water. Pollution gets reduced. It saves farmers from spending money for fertilizers.

The compostable material that goes to a regular landfill not break down as quickly as in a compost environment, because landfills have more temperature and it does not support the growth of microbes, which are required for decomposition of compostable materials.

Yes, I recycle. Recycle and reuse of material is the common theme for various waste management systems. In natural ecosystem, nutrients are also recycled as done in waste treatment, here, waste generated by certain organisms are consumed and recycled by microorganisms. This biological recycle mechanism can be further developed through innovation, and planning to make use of available wastes, thus mimicking the natural ecosystem processes.

The three R’s are, “Reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Strict following of these “three R’s” has many advantages. They gradually reduce the emission of greenhouse gases; reduce the need for landfilling and incineration, and conserves energy.

For example, the most effective way to reduce the waste is to avoid creating it, which helps the environment. For example, automobiles utilize fuels and cause pollution.
