Question
In the instructor comments you are exploring the structure of DNA and genes. Genes code for the individual traits that determine visible qualities such as hair color and height. However, as our understanding of the role of genes and the genome has increased, many researchers are investigating the role of specific genes in determining behavioral traits, such as alcoholism (or more generally addition) (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/04/110412101328.htm (Links to an external site.) ), violence, or sexual preference. This web site has a nice overview of the some of the issues. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/genome/debate.html (Links to an external site.) . The question still remains however, whether the genetic components are more important than environmental factors i.e. Nature vs. Nuture. In this week’s forum you will explore the contribution of the environment and genetics to human behaviors and traits. This debate has been going on for many years and even as our understanding of genes and their relationship to specific human diseases and conditions has increased, the role of the environment has not been diminished. Researchers now are looking to identify genetic components to many other traits such as obesity, addiction (drug or alcohol), sexual preference, violence and intelligence. Now I would like you to research this idea further. Find a human trait, behavior, or even disease that has both a genetic and an environmental component. In your post, describe the chosen trait/behavior/disease and report on genetic and environmental factors that contribute to it. Then based on your research formulate your OWN opinion as to which factors make most significant contribution to your chosen trait/behavior/disease. You may also comment on what would be the best way to alter this trait/behavior/disease, by changing the environmental factors or understanding the genetic aspects that contribute to it. Finally you might want to explore the ethics of whether it is appropriate for our society to try to determine the genetic causes of your chosen trait. Put another way, if a gene were conclusively shown to cause alcoholism or sexual preference, would that be beneficial or could it result in more discrimination against these individuals
Explanation / Answer
I believe that Human behaviour is one of the most important aspects that is controlled by a gene as well as the environment. A human behaviour to be discussed is Criminal behaviour.
Criminals are said to have psychological problems which are inherited from the parents . Criminal behaviour is controlled by a particular gene which is actually either inherited or developed due to certain environmental factors.Environmental factors play key role in the development of this kind of behaviour. Lack of moral values and guidance alongwith personal problems are some of the environmental factors that may lead to criminal behaviour alongwith the criminal gene inherited from parents.
The best way to alter such a situation is proper guidance either by some doctor or a loved one which shows that person the right path.
If a gene were conclusively shown to alcoholism or sexual preference then it would be really beneficial because it can decrease the amount of drug abuse and these people can be provided proper guidance as to decrease the habit and it would result in less discrimination against these individuals
