Question
3. Alka-Seltzer in water contains principally the antacid sodium citrate and the analgesic sodium acetylsalicylate. The active ingredients (in each tablet) include anhydrous citric acid (1000 mg), aspirin (325 mg) [NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug)l, and sodium bicarbonate (Heat-Treated) (1916 mg). a. Calculate the amount in grams of sodium bicarbonate in each tablet b. The antacid in Alka-Seltzer is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO). It decomposes to form carbon dioxide and sodium hydroxide. Write a balanced equation. Calculate the number of moles of CO: that theoretically should have been produced? c. d. How many liters would this be at STP?Explanation / Answer
Ans 3
a) 1 mg = 10-3 g
So 1916 sodium bicarbonate = 1916 x 10-3
= 1.916 g
b) The balaced reaction is given as :
NaHCO3 = NaOH + CO2
c) Number of moles of CO2 would be equal to the number of moles of sodium bicarbonate
= 1.916 / 84.007
= 0.0228 moles
d) 1 mole occupies 22.4 L volume at STP
So 0.0228 moles will occupy 22.4 x 0.0228
= 0.51 L
