Question

Chemistry 151 Modern Experime Questions: 1. Which has the smaller H-N-H bond angle, NHs or NHs? Explain. 2. Which of the following: Br2, CHF3, or NO2, would most likely be the compound? Explain your choice. 3. Acompound with a molecular weight of about 100gmol wasfound to be 12.14% 16.17% O and 71.69% Cl by mass. Determine the molecular formula and draw th structure showing an accurate 3-D perspective. 4. Structural isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but the at not connected to each other in the same manner. Write the Lewis structures fo isomers of pentane, CsH12.

Explanation / Answer

1. Ammonia has a smaller bond angle than ammonium ion. It is because both the nitrogen atoms are sp3 hybridized, but in case of ammonia, there is one lone pair, which will affect lone pair bond-pair repulsion. In ammonium ion, four identical N-H bonds are there and there will be no lone pair bond-pair repulsion. Consequently, ammonia will have smaller bond angle compare to ammonium ion.

2. Bromine is liquid and NO2 is a gas. So there is one possibility to be compound among these molecules is CHF3.
