Question
How can we compare the radius of N3- and Br-? Should we compare their valence first or electron shells first? I mean, Br- has more electron shells than N3- then its radius is larger than N3- ? Or N3- has more valence than Br- then its radius is larger than N3-? Thank you.How can we compare the radius of N3- and Br-? Should we compare their valence first or electron shells first? Explanation / Answer
N3- achieves the noble gas configuration of its period i.e. of Neon(Ne) while Br- achieves that of Krypton(Kr). It can be clearly seen that Br- has more electron shells than N3- hence its size will be bigger. When comparing ions or elements of different periods, always remember that element of higher period will be bigger in size and hence will have a bigger radius.
