Question

Theoretical yeild= 1.65

Percent yeild= 76.22%

Actual yeild= 1.25 g

I need help determining the cost per synthesis, cost per gram and cost per 25 mL bottle. When I performed the calculations myself I got:

cost per synthesis: (70.70/10g)*2 + (50.90/500mL)*0.5mL= 14.19

cost per gram: 14.19/1.25g=11.352

cost per 25 mL bottle: 11.352*25 mL=$283.125

I do not feel like these are correct. Can someone please help?

OH H2SO4(cat) 2-methyl-2-pentanol MW: 102.17 g/mol d: 0.835 g/mL cost: $70.7010 g Amount used: 2.00 g sulfuric acid cost: $50.90V500 mL Amount used: 0.5 mL 2-methyl-1-pentene MW: 84.16 gimol d: 0.682 g/mL cost: $148.00/25 mL Product mass: 125 g

Explanation / Answer

For the given process and the data above

Cost calculation,

Cost per synthesis = (70.07/10) x 2 + (50.90/500) x 0.5 = $14.191

Cost per gram = (14.191/1.25) = $11.353

cost per ml = 11.353/0.682 = $16.65 [convert mass into volume]

cost per 25 ml bottle = 16.65 x 25 = $416.166

[formulas : density = mass/volume]
