Occupational Research Paper
Due by Class Time Tuesday, October 27, 2015
Only papers submitted properly via Blackboard will be accepted.
(The submission link is titled “Occupational Research Report”, found within the “Assignments” tab.)
The purpose of this assignment is to help with your exploration of academic majors, occupations, and the world of work. You are to explore and write about an academic major and an occupation of interest that corresponds with such a major. To complete this assignment, you must use at least FOUR (4) different information sources and cite each of them according to the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines, as reviewed in class.
Useful sources for the occupational information can include, but are not limited to, The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), O*NET, career encyclopedias, newspapers, magazines, journals, and trustworthy online sources. Sources for academic major information may include, but are not limited to, the University at Albany’s undergraduate bulletin, University at Albany’s academic department websites, Career Services Center website, the College Book of Majors, College Majors Handbook, and others. The books and materials reviewed in both the Career Services presentation and the University Library tour will be your greatest assets for this paper.
References: Please read the following guidelines on what you MUST include as references:
Book/Encyclopedia: At least one. Refer to textbook, class notes, and university library for resources.
Scholarly Journal article: At least two. See the university’s “Libraries” page for access to journal databases.
3. Magazine/Newspaper article: You can include magazine and newspaper articles. However, they must be
professional, relevant magazines/periodicals. See your textbook for potential references.
4. Websites: You can include websites. However, they must be professional websites (not a personal webpage) and they cannot be the only source on your reference list. Check with me if you are unsure of the credibility of the
source.
Format: The paper must be typed, proofread, and formatted according to APA standards (12-point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, one-inch margins, title page, parenthetical in-text citations, and references). Your paper should be well organized and contain academic and occupational information, citations of the sources you used, and correctly formatted reference page. Points will be deducted for lack of proper APA formatting. The paper is to be between 4-5 pages, and should NOT exceed 5 pages (not including your title page and reference page, as these are considered separate from the main paper). Note that you do not need an APA style abstract for this paper. The paper must be submitted as an attachment on Blackboard in Microsoft WORD doc format before the start of class on October 27th.
Information to include in your paper:
Refer to your textbook chapter on Gathering Occupational Information for assistance with the topics you should cover in your report.
Academic major information is more open-ended, but should include much of the following:
Degree offered, concentration(s)
Mission statement, philosophy (found on department websites/Undergraduate Bulletin)
Admission requirements, if any (some majors are restricted)
Special requirements for completion of the major
How the above information relates to the occupation you have chosen to write about.
Other occupations in which individuals typically become employed after graduating with a degree in the
major (In addition to the occupation you choose for your paper).
Please Note: This paper is not meant to be a listing of all of the above information. Rather, integrate information in a coherent and concise manner. I do not want to read a paper that just lists out information and facts. Plan ahead, break up your work into manageable chunks of time, and allow extra time for proofreading, technical difficulties, and getting a flat tire on the way to campus. And, of course, email or stop by my office with questions!
