Question
Potty training a child is an important, and sometimes stressful, milestone for both parent and child. Scores of products and training schedules have been touted as breakthroughs over the years, with some claiming that a child can be trained by the age of 1, and in only a few days. For this question, consider how parents, working from the grand and emerging theoretical perspective listed below, would be advised to toilet train their child. For the theory (on the test it will be psychoanalytical, behavioral, cognitive or sociocultural), briefly state: a. developmental issues that might influence toilet training (either positively or negatively) b. practical tips for promoting success (such as pouring colored soap in the toilet so urinating creates colorful bubbles) c. possible causes of failure in potty training
Explanation / Answer
a. Successful potty training depends on 3 factors including physical, cognitive and emotional readiness. Age below 2 years young child or infants cannot assure toilet training since they can't tell that they have to "go" or they went already and they are unable to control whether to go or not. Above 2 years of age, it is a little bit easier to give potty training because most of them can recognize the urge to urinate or defecate and also they can control the sphincter muscles. They can walk to the restrooms and dress or undress themselves. It is not exactly mean for that children are mentally or emotionally ready to do so. Young boys would take longer time than girls for this training. As they grown up they used to watch their parents using toilets or learn by own sitting on the pottery. Night time urination also can be major hurdle in the pottery training, that would take longer time in young childs to control it.
b. Get your child ready – train the child that it’s time to do "pee-pee" or"poo-poo" in the potty.
Make it as fun and playable, create a ritual – doing this repeatedly aware the child its usage of sitting on the potty. Time it right – teach them for a right time of urination like before bed and repeating this change their bowel movement as per timer.
Be prepared – prepare them before long journies as carrying extra plastic adapter and tissue wipes
Give praise-give you child social praise for sitting on the potty.
Demonstrate child how to clean up the hands after using toilets
C. Playing with feces, forceful training, make them upset by scolding or punishments, very young infants less than 2 years, inappropriate bowel movements, bedtime urination etc.
