Question

Write both an equations using Lewis Structures and a balanced chemical equations for the following reactions: Silicon atoms and Chlorine molecules Lithium atoms and Bromine molecules Ethylene molecules (C2H4) and Chlorine molecules; the products is C2H4Cl2.

Explanation / Answer

1. Si (with four dots) + 2 Cl--Cl (put 6 dots on each Cl) ---> Si in the center four chlorine atoms with single bonds and six dots each. 2. 2 Li (with one dot) Br--Br (put six dots on each Br) --> 2 LiBr (draw it together with 8 dots on Br and 2 touching Li this is not a single bond. 3. C=C (draw single bond to two hydrogens on each carbon) + Cl--Cl (same as before) --> C--C (each carbon has two single bonded hydrogens and one single bonded chlorine, don't forget the six dots on each chlorine). .....H... H ..... | ... | H - C - C - H ..... | ... | .... Cl ..Cl It will be 2 carbon atoms, single bonded, and then the H and Cl atoms will be spaced around the carbon atoms, with each carbon atom making a total of 4 bonds (including the C-C bond)
