Question

The first four questions not sure if I got them right, please help. Biochemistry You will have an individual quiz then a group quiz and then work on some more of these questions Trans Fats: What are they with respect to biochemistry? What are their in vivo and in vitro sources? Why are they banned in food products (biochemistry/medicine answer) 1. 2. Find out why there are considerable discussions by environmentalists and capitalists about the use for food and/or fuels for both ethanol and tropical oils (especially palm oil). Concentrate mainly on the latter. What is the connection between palm oil and orangutans? What changes in lipid membrane composition occurs when a colony of E. Coli is transferred from a growth media @ 25 to one at @37. Explain why it has been observed that there are differences in in the lipid membrane composition in the tissue of the lower legs of reindeer compared to the other tissues in their bodies 3. 4.

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

1) Trans Fat is solid in texture, during the process of the Hydrogenation, Hydrogen is added to the vegetable oils. partial hydrogenation of the oils is routinely done to get better flavor of the food and also to increase the self life period of the food. These are prepared invitro (done in laboratory). Use of the transfat is high risk leading to coronary heart disease and Heart attacks.

2) Palm oils are produced from the edible seeds of a plant and pulp of the fruits, deforestration due to cutting of the palm oil trees led to decease in the population of the animals like orangutans. palm oils are more cultivated in malaysia and Indonesia. The Environmentalists concern about rise in carbondioxide levels due to deforestration.

3)

E.Coli has three saturated fatty acids in the membrane bilayer,

1) palmitic (hexadecanoic) acid,

2)  2 unsaturated faty acds , palmitoleic acid

3) cis-vaccenic acid

E. coli changes its fatty acid composition, cis-vaccenic acid increases and palmitic acid decreases with decrease in temperature.

4)

High percentage of Unsaturated fattyacids are present in lower legs of reindeer, at low temperature the lower legs can stay in fluid state due to unsaturated fatty acids.
