Question
I need help with calculating watts of power used in an electrolysis process. First, can I just convert coulombs to watts? Here is a sample question: Calculate the number of grams of aluminum produced in 1.00 h by the electrolysis of molten AlCl3 if the electrical current is 10.0 A. This is what is calculated: Grams Al=(3.60 X 10^4 C)(1 mol e-/96485 C) (1mol Al/3 mol e-)(27.0 gAl/1 mol Al)=3.36 g Al With this information, can you please explain how I could calculate watts of power used? Thank you!!Explanation / Answer
The electrolysis of molten AlCl3 for 29 hr with an electrical current of 363 A produces __________ kg of aluminum metal. First you need to find out how many coulombs have been generated in that time, by using the relationship: 1 A = 1 C/s. 29 h * 60 minute/1 h * 60 s/ 1 min = 1.04*10^5 s 1.04*10^5 s * 363 C/1 s = 3.79*10^7 C Use Faraday's Constant, F (96485 C/ mol electron) to find out the mols of electrons present in the reaction. 3.79*10^7 C * 1 mol E/ 96485 C = 392.8 mol E Since this is an electrolysis reaction, Al3+ is being reduced into solid Al, through the half rxn: Al3+ (aq) + 3e --> Al(s) Now you must do a molar ratio between the electrons and Al. 392.8 mol E * 1 mol Al/ 3 mol E = 130.9 mol Al Convert this value to mass. Mass = Mols * Molar mass = 130.9 mol Al * 26.98 g Al/ 1 mol Al = 3532.38 g Al * 1 kg/1000 g = 3.53 kg 3.53 kg of Al (s) would be produced http://www.google.com.pk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CD8QFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fusers.bergen.org%2Fdanbak%2FAPChemResources_files%2FChapter20OutlineElectroChem.pdf&ei=YB8HUcSoJo7EsgaU54HwCg&usg=AFQjCNEo-PEMW7k2coQ5ok3UiZgNFHtXTw&bvm=bv.41524429,d.Yms http://www.google.com.pk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&cad=rja&ved=0CFQQFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fteachers2.wcs.edu%2Fhigh%2Fchs%2Fkimm1%2FAP%2520Chemistry%2FZumdahl%2520Ch%252017%2520Electrochemistry%2Felectrochemistry%2520problems.pdf&ei=YB8HUcSoJo7EsgaU54HwCg&usg=AFQjCNHZLEGI90-zz_GrE-7itv27YVf1Yg&bvm=bv.41524429,d.Yms http://www.google.com.pk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=7&ved=0CFkQFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.southchemistry.com%2Fjust%2Felectrochem%2520all%25202012.pdf&ei=YB8HUcSoJo7EsgaU54HwCg&usg=AFQjCNGFxAfE56rNFB47WBzroXsgmE0ftA&bvm=bv.41524429,d.Yms
