Question

I need help with all the questions that goes with this graph.

Interpreting Grap 1. The use of DDT for malaria control stopped being funded by the World Health Organization (WH0) In the 1980s. The Woeld Bank required a ban on DDT for developing countries seeking loans. At the same time there has been an lncrease in the resistance of the malarial parasite to the most coen- rial drugs. Since 2001, WHO has allowed the spraying of DOT in Afeica on interior walls to kill msquitoes. Review the graph in Figure 6 and intormation prontded and then answee the following questions. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? Why was a Ibar graph selected to present these data? Could the authors have used a line graph? FIGURE 6 Malaria cases in South Africa before, during, and after banned DDT spraying. Sounce: After Opar, 2006 1972 1976 1980 1964 168 132 136 2000 2004

Explanation / Answer

Independent variable - DDT
Dependent variable - Malaria cases

No, author can't use a line graph here. Because autor try to figure out the three different period in one graph. Malaria cases before, during and after banned DDT spary this are discontinuous data. For three different period bar graph gives a clear picture about information line graph use only during continious data.

During the period 1972-1992 DDt is use to control the mosquito which is responsible for malaria causing agent. DDT kill the mosquito.

1995-2000 period there is sharp increase in malaria cases. It is due to two reasons.
1. WHO stopped DDT sparying due to lack of funds from 1980 which resbonsible for increase in mosquito.
2. Malaria parasite gets resistance against drugs.

2001-2004 period again usage of DDT against mosquito which decrease the malaria cases in this period.
