Question
Chromosome variations
In an effort to bulk up your med - school resume, you have started an independent research project on the cockroach population in The Commons. You have isolated an interested sub - family within your cockroach populations and have examined their chromosomes and found an interesting abnormality in chromosome number 3. Two different forms of chromosome number 3 are shown below and the banding patterns have been labeled on the first chromosome #3 A - H.: A. What term or terms best describes the difference between these chromosomes (the chromosomal mutation)? B. Assume a cockroach had one copy of each of these chromosomes. Draw the chromosomes as they would be paired at the first meiotic prophase. Show all four strands !!. Use the letters as provided for orientation. C. Assuming a single crossing over event between regions D and E, draw the gametes that would result from that meiotic event (see why you needed four strands above?). Indicate which would be viable.Explanation / Answer
A. This is inversion mutation.
B.
C. I am assuming that crossing over is in one strand only. If crossing over occurs between C and E, Then the four gametes will be :- ABCDEFGH, ABEDC
GH (non- cross overs) and ABCDCFGH and ABEDEFGH.
