Excel 2013 Office 365 Home Premium cannot change cell or font colors

i cannot change font or cell colors in excel 2013. I am using Windows 8 and I have never had this problem before. I tried to change conditional formatting but that didn't work. I have a new computer and just recently installed Office 365 Home Premium. I tried to change the conditional formatting by clearing the rules and I also checked my printer to assure that it is set up for color printing. Thank you....sincerely for any help you can provide...
