Question

You are an 18 year old athlete and have been confirmed by an MRI that you have a complete rupture of you ACL in your knee. You plan to stay active and play sports for many years to come. Your doctor has recommended ACL reconstruction surgery. You have researched the options to this surgery. Which specific ACL surgery is best for you?

Explain the specifics of the surgery and why it is the best reconstructive surgery for you and your lifestyle.

Would this surgery be the best for a non-active 55 year old? What specific ACL reconstruction surgery would be more appropriate for this individual? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is one of the major stabilizing ligaments within the knee and connects the femur to the tibia and prevents instability. ACL provides rotatory stability to the knee. In some cases, when people will get damage to the ACL, anterior cruciate ligament surgery will be performed to reconstruct or repair the ACL by using the graft (auto or allograft).

Which specific ACL surgery is best for you?

He can go for Arhroscopic surgery where surgery is done through incisions. Because of Arthroscopic surgery, patient will recover fast and will have few risks. He can return to his work fast.

Explain the specifics of the surgery and why it is the best reconstructive surgery for you and your lifestyle.

It is better to go for ACL surgery using auto graft tissue (tendon of the kneecap also known as patellar tendon or hamstring tendons). So that he can avoid the graft rejection. ACL surgery will be helpful in restoring the normal stability in the knee and you can start working as usual. You can see a limit loss of function in the knee and it will prevent injury or degeneration to other knee structures. So, sports persons prefer this.

Would this surgery be the best for a non-active 55 year old? What specific ACL reconstruction surgery would be more appropriate for this individual? Explain.

People who are not very active in their spots will not require this surgery. They can follow some other methods to solve their problems such as running in a straight line, swimming, bike riding and golf. They can go for physiotherapy to restore movement and to strengthen the lower limb. They can minimize instability of the knee and risk of further joint injury following the above said methods. As they are not involved actively in sports they wouldn’t feel the instability from an ACL-deficient knee.
