2)question: what laboratory test might be done now which were not available in 1939?how might these help?

During 1939, they would mainly determine if a person had typhoid fever through stool samples, now with the increase in technology there are many more option to determine if someone has typhoid fever. Some laboratory test that might be done now which were not available in 1939 are fluorescent antibody test , bone marrow culture, liver test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent essay (Elisa). These test will help with identifying both new cases and people who are carrying the disease. The fluorescent antibody test checks for antibodies to the S-Tyhi. The bone marrow culture provides a good bacteriological confirmation, and the ELISA test looks for antigens that are specific to the typhoid bacteria.

Explanation / Answer

Examination of stool samples is the only available test for the diagnosis of typhoid until 1939. Today we have most sophisticated methods such as fluorescent antibody test, bone marrow culture, ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) and liver test, which gives exact diagnosis of typhoid. These tests are very helpful in determining the newly infected cases and also those that are carrying the disease. The mechanism of florescent antibody test underlies the binding of antibodies specific to the S-Typhi and in ELISA test is observed for the binding of antigens specific to the typhoid bacteria. Bone marrow culture is very helpful for bacteriological conformation by laboratory examination.
