The development of the reproductive system begins at the prenatal stage of the embryo. The reproductive organs are developed from the intermediate mesoderm.
Mesonephric (Wolffian) ducts:
The mesonephric duct, also called the Wolffian duct, which originates from the prenephric duct.
This duct forms the tube of the epididymis, the ductus deferens, and the ejaculatory duct, while the seminal vesicle arises during the 1st semester of the pregnancy.
The same duct atrophies in female.
Paramesonephric (Mullerian) ducts:
Immediately after the formation of the Wolffian ducts, a second pair of ducts called Mullerian ducts is developed.
These ducts atrophy in males.
In female Mullerian ducts undergo further development. The portions which lie in the genital cord fuse to form the uterus and vagina.
The parts outside this cord remain separate, and each forms the corresponding Fallopian tube.
Gonads:
The gonads are further developed into testes in males and ovaries in females.
