Question

What is the difference between most similar systems design and most different systems design?

All i know is similar system = all same but 1 different. Most different system = all different but 1 same (SIMPLY PUT). But I really don't understand in depth what they are used for, what they really are.

And if they ask to make an example, and make a chart, I don't know how to do it unless someone makes it for me. How do you create a most similar systems design (MSSD) or most different systems design? Any in depth understanding about this would really help. I'm really frustrated...

Explanation / Answer

Comparative politics is a field and a method used in political science, characterized by an empirical approach based on the comparative method. In other words, comparative politics is the study of the domestic politics, political institutions, and conflicts of countries.Comparative politics is not defined by the object of its study, but rather by the method it applies to study political phenomena.

The MSSD & MDSD are the comparative methods which are used in comparative research.

Most Similar Systems Design- It consists in comparing very similar cases which only differ in the dependent variable, on the assumption that this would make it easier to find those independent variables which explain the presence/absence of the dependent variable.MSSD is very helpful because since it compares similar objects. In a basic sense, MSSD starts out with similar variables between subjects and tries to figure out why the outcome is different between the subjects.

MSSD, Method of Difference
Concentrate on variation across cases as the basis of explanation
X increases , Y increases
X decreases , Y decreases
.: X and Y are directly correlated
If X increase precedes Y increase (lagged time series) we infer causality.

Most Different Systems Design - It consists in comparing very different cases, all of which however have in common the same dependent variable, so that any other circumstance which is present in all the cases can be regarded as the independent variable.MDSD, differs from MSSD with focus and the fact that it does not take a strict variable application.MDSD uses the difference instead of the similarities which MSSD does.

MDSD, Method of Agreement
Concentrate on the commonalities across cases, to eliminate other explanations
W,X,R,T tens to Y
A,X,G,B tends to Y
C,X,H,P tends to Y
.: Xtends to Y since it is the only constant relationship.

These two methods have been derived from the John Sturat Mills canons of logic.

Together, these approaches form a core research strategy in comparative politicsand a foundation of the Area Studies discipline.

Both these methods tends to find the implication from one to another which are beong compared. The results derived are considerd and can be known the major possibility of the occurence of that event.
