EPIDIOMOLOGY:
There has been a new outbreak of a flu-like illness among refugees in a camp. A virus never identified previously was isolated from a few of the patients.
1. What are two possible factors that could have led to the emergence of this new flu-like illness?
2. The illness starts to spread to other refugee camps and appears to be quite contagious. What are two possible control methods to stop the spread of this illness?
3. What method(s) of surveillance might be useful to help monitor the spread of this disease?
Explanation / Answer
1. Flu might have spread by droplets of contagious water spreading through cough and sneeze of an infected person in close distances. Flu may also spread by touching a flu infected place. And then it may spread from person to person.
2. The infected group of people should not be allowed to get in touch with other healthy people. Proper and effective medication with vaccines should be given. Annual flu vaccine must be given to the healthy people around that area.
3. It should be strictly observed that infected people dont meet with healthy ones. And if they meet, precautions should be followed strictly. Like they should maintain the diatance of more than 6 feet while talking to each other.
