3. Neonicotinoids are the insecticides that act on nervous system of insects; their structure is similar to nicotine. Neonicotinoids have less toxic effects on birds and mammals than organophosphates, but they are toxic to bees. Thus, neonicotinoids are used on plants only those are not attractive to the bees.

Neonicotinoids also have veterinary applications. Eg: Dinotefuran is used in in baits against house and spot-ons for dogs and cats against fleas.
