Question
Please could you help me with the following problem. I havesubmitted it twice before, and have received two conflictinganswers. Please would you provide me with the correct answeras well as an explanation. Thank-you.Rank the following salts by largest to smallest lattice energy:CsCl, MgBr2, LiCl, CaO, NaCl.
(Note: the 2 in MgBr2 should be a subscript, referring to the solidmagnesium bromide).
a. CaO >CsCl > MgBr2 > LiCl > NaCl
b. CaO > MgBr2> LiCl > NaCl > CsCl
c. CsCl > MgBr2> NaCl > LiCl > CaO
d. CsCl > NaCl> LiCl > MgBr2 > CaO
e. CaO > MgBr2> CsCl > LiCl > NaCl
Explanation / Answer
Lattice energy can be defined as that the energyrequired to completely seperate one mole of the solid ioniccompound into its gaseous ions. The lattice energy is generally depends on the size andcharge of the ions, the ions that contains the small size or greatercharge are attract together and forms the greater latticeenegy. Thus in the given ionic compounds CaO has the greaterlattice energy. Next MgBr2 has the greater lattice energy because theattraction is possible between the Mg(+2) and 2Br(-1) By observing such cases the decreasing order of latticeenergy for the given compounds are as follows. CaO > MgBr2 > LiCl > NaCl > CsCl Thus the answer is b)Related Questions
