Question
In a lab, we reacted calcium carbide with water to produce ethyne gas. We first had to calibrate the test tube by using a graduated cylinder. Then, we collected the gas by filling and inverting a test tube full of water in a trough, and letting the gas replace the water. We then had to use our thumb/a rubber stopper to lift the test tube out of the water, and then release the thumb, so that the excess water in the test tube would flow out. Then a flamming splint was placed into the test tube full of ethyne gas to combust it. The question is to find two ways that could help improve the lab. I can't seem to think of anything! Any help is appreciated.Explanation / Answer
A few ways... first by eliminating your less accurate glasswaresuch as graduated cylinders for calibration. Also some mannerof sealing the tube better than stopper/thumb... perhaps some sortof stopcock setup?
