Question

The density of a 2.3 M aqueous solution of methanol (CH3OH) is0.976 g/mL. What is the molality of the solution? The molar mass ofmethanol is 32.04 g.

Please show work/explain steps... thanks.

Explanation / Answer

M = moles of solute / L of solution Assume 1 L of solution -> 2.3 moles of solute Mass of CH3OH = 2.3 moles x (32.04 g/mol) = 73.692 g Mass of solution = 1 L x (976 g/L) = 976 g Mass of water = mass of solution - mass of CH3OH                        = 976 - 73.692 = 902.308 g = .902308 kg molality = moles of solute / kg of solvent molality = 2.3 moles / .902308 kg = 2.55 m
