Question
Given a gas with positive Joule-Thompson coefficient , whathappens to its enthalpy(H) if its pressure increases at constant temperature? Providephysical explanation for your
answer.
Explanation / Answer
= dT/dP|H > 0 (dT/dP)H *(dP/dH)T*(dH/dT)P =-1 *(dP/dH)T*(Cp) = -1 -*Cp = (dH/dP)T H goes down when P increases (based on the negative sign) B/c T is constant, average KE is the same. So by increasing thepressure, the gas is compressed. The gas molecules are thereforecloser together and at a lower energy state (enthalpydecreases)
